E1173. Digital Toolkit: Finding the Right Tools for Effective Microlearning in Radiology Education

Background
Radiology is an ever-changing field of medicine with newer imaging technologies released every few decades and frequent improvements to existing modalities. From “hanging films” to comprehensive radiology workstations, we have come a long way in how radiologists practice and teach, but in this digital era, there is a growing need to adapt our teaching techniques. There are proven cognitive benefits of using pictures to teach and well-known advantages of using digital illustrations over paper drawings. Recent COVID-19 pandemic has been disruptive to the “at workstation” norm of radiology teaching, we aim to harness these digital tools to continue our excellent anatomical and radiological teaching during these difficult times.

Educational Goals / Teaching Points
• To familiarize radiologists with a variety of tablet apps and tools now available for radiology teaching • To introduce a new paradigm of using creative hand-drawn diagrams and innovative 3D human anatomy atlases as a microlearning technique • To illustrate how these methods have been harnessed for remote collaborations with trainees and clinical colleagues during the recent social distancing mandates for the COVID-19 pandemic

Key Anatomic/Physiologic Issues and Imaging Findings/Techniques
In this exhibit, we will first define micro-learning and provide examples of such techniques. Given known advantages of teaching using pictures, we will introduce innovative tablet applications and 3-D human atlases which are used to create hand-drawn diagrams and personal teaching tools essential for radiology teaching. We will provide examples of these tools for use in medical student, resident and fellow teaching, radiology-surgery correlation and creating publication style artwork. During the recent COVID-19 times with mandated social and physical distancing measures, remote teaching and collaboration tools have become even more important for simultaneous review of cases with trainees and clinicians.

Conclusion
Radiology teaching needs to adapt to the constantly evolving digital era with the help of innovative tablet apps and digital tools. This is key in preserving essential medical teaching in current trying socially and physically distant times.
