E4973. Meet the Neighbors in the Neck: Pictorial Review on Parathyroid Glands, Salivary Glands, and Lymph Nodes

Background
Sonographic application in the neck extends beyond thyroid disorders. It has been found to be extremely sensitive in detecting pathologies of the parathyroid, salivary glands, and cervical lymph nodes owing to their superficial anatomical placement in the head and neck. The purpose of this study is to review the normal anatomy of the neck and its appearance on ultrasound, the technical factors affecting proper visualization of these structures and how to correct them, and the abnormal findings suggesting pathology.

Educational Goals / Teaching Points
- Review anatomy of the neck, most specifically: parathyroids, salivary glands, lymph nodes, and trachea. - Discuss pros and cons of using ultrasound (US) for evaluation of parathyroids, salivary glands, and lymph nodes. - Recognize normal US characteristics of parathyroids, salivary glands, lymph nodes, and trachea. - Supply case examples of common pathology on US of the parathyroid glands, salivary glands, and lymph nodes.

Key Anatomic/Physiologic Issues and Imaging Findings/Techniques
In this educational exhibit, we will review normal sonographic appearance of the parathyroid glands, salivary glands, and neck lymph nodes. Additionally, we will demonstrate and characterize multiple pathologies for each, including parathyroid adenoma, lymphoma, and carcinoma of the sublingual gland, among others.

Conclusion
This educational exhibit will demonstrate the importance of recognizing ultrasound features in the initial assessment of parathyroid glands, salivary glands, and neck lymph nodes. We present key imaging findings for better identification and differentiation between pathologies with comparable image findings. After viewing our educational exhibit, the reader should be able to efficiently recognize the salient imaging features of common pathology and help guide clinicians with management to improve clinical outcomes.
