Background
The anatomy and nature of the physis predisposes it to a unique set of pathologic processes that can pose a diagnostic challenge to the radiologist, particularly radiologists who primarily interprets studies of adults.
Educational Goals / Teaching Points
The purpose of this educational exhibit is to review the normal development and appearance of the physis as well as the distinct ailments that affect the physis.
Key Anatomic/Physiologic Issues and Imaging Findings/Techniques
We will present imaging techniques and tips for diagnosing physeal bars, focal periphyseal edema (FOPE) zones, trauma, periosteal entrapment, osteonecrosis, and neoplasm, and will review the pathophysiology for each case. This exhibit will also review normal variants that may simulate disease.
Conclusion
The physis can be a diagnostic challenge on imaging examinations, particularly those that are less accustomed to imaging pediatric patients. This case-based review highlights high-yield tips for evaluating some common pathologies of the physis.
