Background
This exhibit includes an introduction to terminology and systematic approach to the evaluation of cancer imaging studies, identification of baseline and nadir studies in relation to cancer treatment, and establish a standardized approach to assess tumor response to cancer treatment.
Educational Goals / Teaching Points
Understand general concepts of tumor response criteria applicable to the reading room. Review anticancer treatments (chemotherapy vs. targeted therapy). Evaluation of typical and atypical response patterns in patients treated with novel anticancer agents with reference to baseline and nadir scans.
Key Anatomic/Physiologic Issues and Imaging Findings/Techniques
Concepts of tumor burden, including target lesion and non-target lesions. Comprehensive review of tumor features, including relevant genomics, mutational status, and pathology type in regards to selected examples of thoracic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and gynecological malignancies. Indication for study, particularly tumor and treatment characteristics. Anticancer treatment overview
Timing of treatment to guide image interpretation. Evaluation of treatment response patterns.
Conclusion
A standardized, systematic approach can be utilized to successfully assess tumor response to cancer treatment.
