Background
To provide a pictorial review of gunshot wounds (GSWs) and stab wounds (SWs), from head to pelvis. To show different imaging findings of GSWs and SWs. This exhibit is intended for radiology residents and emergency radiology fellows.
Educational Goals / Teaching Points
Present our experience of tomographic findings in patients with GSWs and SWs. Describe and illustrate the CT images of solid organs, hollow visceral and vascular injuries, and other lesions. Outline the diagnostic algorithm for the initial assessment of patients with GSWs and SWs.
Key Anatomic/Physiologic Issues and Imaging Findings/Techniques
This exhibit includes a brief introduction to GSWs and SWs, a diagnostic algorithm in acute patients with GSWs and SWs, and a case-based review of the head and neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis.
Conclusion
Timely identification of injuries secondary to penetrating trauma can prevent poor patient outcomes.
Knowledge of the imaging characteristics of injuries acquired in penetrating trauma, including direct and indirect signs, aids in the correct characterization of the injury, which is vital for clinical decision making.
