E2289. Renal Angiomyolipoma Classification and Features That Help Differentiate From Renal Cell Carcinoma and Other Entities
Authors
  1. Hajra Idrees; MD Anderson Cancer Center
Background
Renal Angiomyolipomas (AML) are commonly misdiagnosed as a variety of entities including renal cell carcinoma, especially the clear cell variant. Previously this would result in unnecessary surgeries. This educational exhibit will focus on two new classification systems, Song and Jinzaki respectively, how to differentiate them and how they are useful in diagnosing renal AML.

Educational Goals / Teaching Points
Describe the Jinzaki renal angiomyolipoma (AML) classification system. Describe the song renal AML classification system. Describe the merits and demerits of both classification systems. Describe the purpose of both classification systems. Differentiate RCC including clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) from renal AML including fat-invisible renal AML carcinoma. Goals for the new classifications system.

Key Anatomic/Physiologic Issues and Imaging Findings/Techniques
Renal AML background. Why did we require new classification systems. Jinzaki classification definitions and descriptions. Song classification definitions and descriptions. CT / MRI findings for each class. Goals for the new classification systems. Description of radiological terminologies used to classify each lesion. Merits and demerits of both classification systems. Conclusion. References.
