Background
This is an educational exhibit regarding ultrasound evaluation of superficial masses.

Educational Goals / Teaching Points
Optimal ultrasound technique for evaluation of superficial soft tissue masses, distinguishing between benign and malignant masses, and review imaging appearance of common and uncommon masses.

Key Anatomic/Physiologic Issues and Imaging Findings/Techniques
Overview of ultrasound, advantages and disadvantages. Technical considerations (different transducers and frequencies, optimal doppler settings, probe pressure, cine clips, measurements. Briefly discuss emerging techniques - elastography, contrast enhancement). Anatomy review (different layers ranging from the epidermis to bone). Mass characteristics (size, shape, echogenicity, margins and orientation, acoustic enhancement versus shadowing, vascularity, benign versus malignant features). Clinical context (mass location, history of malignancy, prior surgeries, recent trauma, growth, pain). Cases (benign masses - epidermoid cyst, lipoma, ganglion cyst, schwannoma, etc., malignant masses - sarcoma, liposarcoma, metastases, lymphoma, etc., miscellaneous - infection, trauma, vascular malformations, mass mimickers). Further work-up: additional imaging and/or biopsy. Clinical follow-up. Review.

Conclusion
Optimal US technique and settings, distinguish between benign and malignant masses, and review imaging appearance of common and uncommon masses.
